Cultivate Community

“Life’s most persistent and urgent questions is, What are your doing for others?”

~ Martin Luther King Jr.

Several years ago huffing and puffing at 11,152 feet above sea level in Cusco Peru – a beautiful city in the Peruvian Andes - my husband was attempting to push our two giant suitcases….up a fairly steep hill….on a broken ancient Spanish colonial cobblestone street trying to catch our return transportation to the airport. It was this experience that caused us to rethink our choice of baggage and inspired us to begin packing with a purpose. We now travel with hiking backpacks and most of what we carry is donated somewhere upon arrival.

Prior to our cobblestone adventure we had volunteered for years locally with various organizations Firefighters for Kids – Out of the Darkness Suicide Awareness – PTO Co-Presidents for daughter’s Elementary School– Paw’s Walk etc. We began to explore options for volunteering when traveling internationally. Our largest venture has been in Guatemala with Mayan Families Foundation where we built a Eco-Stove to replace the open cooking fire that caused toxic fumes inside the home it was used in. We also provided a EcoFiltro for clean water.

When we were in Fiji we made donations to a nearby island village school.

Our largest venture has been in Guatemala with Mayan Families Foundation where we built a Eco-Stove to replace the open cooking fire that caused toxic fumes inside the home it was used in. We also provided a EcoFiltro for clean water.

Now when we travel one of the first things we research is where we can volunteer or what we can bring to donate to a nonprofit organization where we are going. Often, we are traveling to 3rd world countries or places where supplies are not as easily accessible. Our adventures have taken on a deeper meaning for us by adding the value of service to others.

Cultivate Community

Cultivate Balance is excited to partner with a local non-profit community center in Tamarindo, Costa Rica- the Conectando Corazones De Santa Rosa Center for one of our excursions on the Women’s Wellness Retreat in October 2021. The mission of the community center is the provide a “safe place”-

“We hold a safe space for local children to attend workshops, activities, and education classes. They can escape the hardships of daily life in poverty and have a chance to be kids.

We also support other members of the community in vulnerable situations such as emergency medical and dental care, domestic violence situations, home flooding, families in need of food, educational scholarships, job opportunities, building and restoring homes”.

We will be spending a small bit of time touring the center, having an afternoon coffee/tea with a few local women who utilize the center and then donating ~200 reusable pads for the center to distribute to local women who do not have access to hygiene products. This is going to be a fantastic way for the Women’s group to help out a sister – provide sustainable assistance – and engage culturally.
